It's about murdering police officers

As we all know, a few days ago (December 2014) two NYC police officers were shot to death while sitting in a patrol car.  The individual who shot them had earlier shot his girl friend.  He then allegedly posted on his social media account a claim that he was going to kill police officers in retaliation for the deaths of Michael Brown in Ferguson, MO, and Eric Garner in NYC.

As usual the rightwingers went absolutely berserk, attacking demonstrators who are protesting the deaths of Brown and Garner.

HOWEVER -- earlier this year, a couple (wife and husband) walked into a pizza parlor in Las Vegas where two Vegas police officers were eating lunch -- the couple -- Jerad and Amanda Miller -- pulled out several firearms and killed the two cops.  They then stripped the police officers' bodies of their guns and covered the bodies in the Gadsden flag -- the familiar yellow and black "Don't Tread On Me" flag.

As it turned out, the Millers had been at the Clive Bundy ranch standoff where they threatened federal officers.  Their Facebook accounts were filled with anti-government and anti-police rants.

So -- when these two people murdered two police officers, exactly what did the rightwing say?

NOT A GODDAM WORD.

You heard not a single word of condemnation from Limbaugh, Fox, Beck, or any of the other rightwing propagandists.

And why not?

Because these two people were Tea Party stalwarts -- they covered the dead cops' bodies with the flag used by the Tea Party -- they espoused all the usual Tea Party bullshit.

Funny how that works -- black guy kills a cop and the rightwing is all up in arms.  Tea Partiers kill two cops and the rightwing doesn't give a shit.

Okay, Republicans, repeal this, you worthless sonsabitches!!!!

Remember how the Republicans voted over 40 times to repeal the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare)?

Notice any similarities?

Killed by police officers, or, died in police custody under questionable circumstances.
Notice a pattern?

The more things change, the more they stay the same

Mary Landrieu’s loss in the senate run-off election in Louisiana gives the deep South entirely to Republicans for the first time in history. From Texas through the Carolinas, the GOP now controls every U. S. Senate seat, every governorship, and every state legislature. The Republican party began its life before the Civil War as the party that took on slavery, leaving the deep South to the Democratic party.

After the Civil War and a brief period of "reconstruction," Jim Crow Democrats controlled the South, enacting the "black codes" that essentially reinstated slavery.  Under these laws, blacks were kept from voting through a web of laws, fees, rules, and intimidation by the Klan.

When Harry Truman integrated the armed forces, Strom Thurmond led a walk-out, forming his Dixiecrat Party.  The hatred for Truman was so deep that he did not appear on the presidential ballot in at least one Southern state.

When Lyndon Johnson signed the Civil Rights and Voting Rights acts in the mid-1960's, he is said to have remarked "I have handed the South to the Republican Party for a decade."  LBJ knew this because he knew that among his fellow Southerners, blind hatred of African-Americans trumped every other factor.  In fact, LBJ said:

I'll tell you what's at the bottom of it. If you can convince the lowest white man he's better than the best colored man, he won't notice you're picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he'll empty his pockets for you.
Said in 1960 in response to racist signs held by Johnson's motorcade in Tennessee.

Whether we call Southern politicians Democrats (before the Civil Rights and Voting Rights acts) or Republicans (after the two acts)
the sad fact is southern white politics is dominated by hidebound racists seeking to suppress the votes of African-Americans.  Oh, they may have degrees from fine universities, attend church, wear tailor-made suits, and praise diversity.  But make no mistake -- they will vote to suppress African-Americans and poor people every time, without fail.

I say to Mary Landrieu and Southern "Democrats" who joined her in turning her back on a Democratic President:  Good riddance.

Regardless of party label, the goal must be to fight voter suppression, strengthen the voices of minorities, and encourage white southern progressives to continue their fight.

Let's see if I understand this.

Conservatives tell the rest of us to sit down, shut up, and accept the Darrell Wilson verdict.  After all, they say, the grand jury has spoken.

Meanwhile, they start their NINTH "investigation" of Benghazi.  After all, the House Intelligence Committee released a report that concluded there was no wrongdoing and no attempt to deceive by the administration.

What happened to that GOP outrage??

As I write this comment, it's after 11:00 PM, Friday, 21 November 2014.  President Obama spoke last night and announced the executive orders he was issuing to deal with certain aspects of immigration.

Republicans responded by foaming at the mouth, raging, shrieking about how the President is a "dictator," "tyrant," and is "destroying the Constitution."  They vowed to stop him.

And then they all left town.

That's right, on Friday, less than 24 hours after the President's speech, Congress adjourned and everyone headed home for a two-week Thanksgiving break.

But I thought they wanted to defend the Constitution from Obama the Tyrant???

What a bunch of hypocrites!!!

Two events that tell a really big story

The European Space Agency -- a consortium of scientists from European nations -- designed and built a ship that traveled through space for 310 million miles and landed on a comet.

Meanwhile, in Arizona, a local school board ripped out of a high school biology textbook the pages that describe contraception.

It's all in the name

Yes, it really is all in the name.  It matters what you call yourself.

After all, "Tea Party" sounds so much more respectable than "Wild-eyed, hate-filled, foaming-at-the-mouth, tire-biting-crazy lynch mob of ignoramusses."

See what I mean?

What is the price of ignorance?

For centuries, philosophers have debated the question:  "What is the price of ignorance?"

Now we know:  Sarah Palin now has her own subscription cable TV channel.  A subscription costs $9.95 per month or $99.95 a year.  And that, folks, is the price of ignorance.

Meanwhile, let's see how the Palin channel is doing.

It’s been three months since Sarah Palin launched her own television channel. The Daily Beast features an article this morning about the success/failure of the channel.
The Daily Beast reports that the channel has had a “barely measurable 36,000 visitors in September.” That information was based on a Quantcast inquiry that shows 36,000 visitors for September on sarahpalin channel. A more detailed review of the Comcast site reveals the following information about visits to Sarahpalinchannel.com:
July 2014 - 48,329 visits
August 2014 - 113,856 visitsSeptember 2014 - 35,778 visits  -- that's a decline of -26% from the first July and a decline of -69% from August

There is no information available for October.  As of 6 November, 305 people -- an average of 50.8 people per dayhave visited the channel. If that trend continues throughout November, Sarah would have roughly 1,525 views for the month. Hmmmm.  Maybe there's not as much ignorance as I thought.

Ebola: Rightwingers need to STFD and STFU

Here's a message to you rightwingnutjobs who are running off at the mouth about EBOLA!! QUARANTINE!! OHMYGODWEALLAREGOINGTODIE!!!!  BAN FLIGHTS!!

With one exception, the only people in the USofA to come down with ebola are nurses and physicians -- you know, educated people with scientific backgrounds, who care for others.  You rightwingerdingers are in no danger.

Go back to watching the Sarah Palin Channel.

How many ebola cases have occurred in the USofA?

As of 27 October, in the USA:

-- Kim Kardashian has had more husbands than there have been ebola deaths in the US.

-- Donald Trump has had more bankruptcies than there have been ebola cases in the US.

How about we quarantine Trump and Kardashian to protect us from REAL infections??

Dozens declared free of risk of ebola -- will Fox headline this fact 24/7??

The dozens of people who had direct or indirect contact with the guy who died of ebola in Texas have been declared free of the virus after 21 days of quarantine.

At least one chapter of the Ebola saga neared a close Sunday, as most of the dozens of people who had direct or indirect contact here with Thomas Eric Duncan, the Liberian man who died of Ebola, had been told by officials that they were no longer at risk of contracting the disease.
Mr. Duncan’s fiancĂ©e, Louise Troh, who nursed him in their cramped apartment while he suffered from diarrhea and who was put under state-ordered quarantine, was set to be declared Ebola-free by officials at the end of Sunday. So, too, were the paramedics who drove an ailing Mr. Duncan to a hospital and health care workers who drew or processed his blood. And a mandatory quarantine was lifted for a homeless man who later rode in the same ambulance as Mr. Duncan before it was disinfected.
The 21-day monitoring period ended Sunday and Monday for nearly all the roughly 50 people. It concludes as federal health officials are tightening the guidelines for the protective gear worn by health care workers treating Ebola patients.

Hmmmm.  Let's see -- all the folks who contacted, directly or indirectly the ONE person who died of ebola are okay.  The lady on the bus who vomited and claimed she had recently returned from West Africa was lying.  The Spanish nurse who claimed to have been exposed is free of the disease.  Two people remain hospitalized in Atlanta, both of them are expected to survive.

Will Fox report this news with the same shrieking and hand-wringing as they reported the "ebola outbreak?"

You know the answer to that.

Jimmy Carter, Barack Obama, and Republican lies

Even today, Jimmy Carter has not recovered from the right-wing attacks upon his character in 1980. They were able to portray him as the weakest President in history, who was weak in foreign policy and in economic policies at home. In fact:

  •  It was his efforts that got the Camp David accords and agreement between Begin and Sadat.
  •  It was his energy policy that was adopted by Reagan and served us well for several years.
  •  It was his honesty that was needed after Watergate and the corruption and criminality in the White House under Nixon.

But, because of the Iran hostage crisis, the Republicans painted him as weak and unable to govern. Eventually, the hostages came home, after Reagan was elected. But they were not killed, as were the 241 service members in Beirut that were car-bombed under Reagan's incompetence.

Today, they are doing the same type of character assassination against Barack Obama. And, just like with Jimmy Carter, they are succeeding. "Obama is weak. He is incompetent. He is a liar. He is not even an American". And so forth, and so forth...

When in fact, Barack Obama is one of the most involved foreign policy Presidents we have had in a very long time. He has spent most of his time in office cleaning up the mess and disasters left behind by Bush, Cheney, and the Republican war mongers. History will probably record that his major accomplishment in office was in keeping the country from going under after the disastrous market and housing crash of 2008? But, the right-wing will never mention that as they continue to tear him down and to obstruct every idea that he might propose.

Police reports of the Palin family's drunken brawl

Several weeks ago, reports emerged from Alaska of a birthday party in Anchorage that erupted into a wild, drunken melee when the entire Palin family -- including 5-year-old Tripp -- arrived at the party in a white Hummer lino.  According to witnesses, the entire Palin family was shit-faced drunk (well, maybe the 5-year-old was sober).  The family then proceeded to start a huge brawl that ended with:

--  son Track Palin shirtless, bleeding from several places, standing the street giving the world the middle finger and swearing;

-- daughters Bristol and Willow punching the homeowner repeatedly in the face while calling all the women at the party the C-word;

-- Sarah Palin shrieking "Do you know who we are?"

-- And several people at the party shouting "Get the f*** out of here, this is not your hillbilly reality show!!"

Now the complete Anchorage Police Department reports are online.  Read them here:
https://www.scribd.com/doc/242436455/Palin-Brawl-Police-Report

My favorite line from the police reports describes Bristol Palin's encounter with one of the people at the party, after she had punched him in the face several times:

"Korey had drug (sic) her across the lawn by her legs and was calling her a cunt and a slut."

And that, folks, is the family that almost became the Vice-President of the US.  Thanks, John McCain, for inflicting this pack of trash on the rest of the country.

The GOTP 2016 clown car is filling up fast!!!!

Remember the circus?  Remember the act where a tiny car would come driving, careening into the center ring and a clown would jump out -- then another and another and another -- ??  Well, folks, that's exactly what the race to pick a Republican 2016 presidential candidate is looking like -- A CLOWN CAR!!!  And it's filling up fast!!

This weekend -- 27-28 September -- Washington, DC, was the scene of the "Values Voters Summit," which is nothing but another gathering of rightwingnutjobs who come together to listen to all the usual ignoramusses proclaim all the usual rightwing bullshit.  Then, after listening to several hours of nonsense, the "values voters" participate in a Presidential straw poll to select their favorite to be the GOTP 2016 Presidential candidate.

Here are the results:

Tea Party Republican Ted Cruz walked away from this weekend’s Value Voters summit as the first choice in the conservative conclave’s annual presidential straw poll, according to the Washington Post.
The Texas senator, known more for his rhetorical bomb-throwing than for legislative accomplishments, received 25 percent of the vote, down from the 42 percent he received in 2013.
Retired neurosurgeon and Tea Party favorite Dr. Ben Carson, came in second with 20 percent of the vote, while former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee was third with 12 percent. Perennial presidential candidate and former Pennsylvania senator Rick Santorum, was fourth with 10 percent, followed by fifth place finisher, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, with 7 percent.

Treasonous Republicans are urging US generals to resign

Rep. Doug Lamborn says he and like-minded House Republicans are trying to destabilize the American military in order to foil American foreign policy abroad. No really, he's bragging about it.
[T]hat is exactly what Rep. Doug Lamborn (R-Colo.) told a group of voters he wants to see happen, the Colorado Independent reported.
“A lot of us are talking to the generals behind the scenes, saying, ‘Hey, if you disagree with the policy that the White House has given you, let’s have a resignation,’” Lamborn said Tuesday, adding that if generals resigned en masse in protest of President Barack Obama’s Middle East policy, they would “go out in a blaze of glory.”
Lamborn, it should be noted, is a member of the House Armed Services Committee.
Remember the Bush years, when we were being told that not supporting the president during a time of war was tantamount to hating America, and that we had to "watch what we say," and American intelligence agencies were monitoring anti-war groups like the Quakers under the suspicion that they might damage the war effort.
If you're meeting with American military generals and telling them to quit en masse to be able to undermine the president's ability to conduct military operations, what the hell do you call that?

Pat Robertson: Liquor Officer; Coward

You need to read the article at this link:  Pat "Liquor Officer" Robinson.

Everyone knows who Pat Robertson is.  In case you don't know, he's the old nutcase biblethumping TV preacher who holds forth every day on his "700 Club" TV show.  Robertson presents himself as THE expert on all topics.

Turns out Robertson is a lying sack of shit, a charlatan, and a flim-flam artist.

The linked article deals with Robertson's "service" during the Korean War.  Robertson's father was a US Senator; Robertson was a Marine Corps lieutenant.  As a Marine lieutenant during the Korean War, Robertson no doubt was headed into combat where he likely would be killed or wounded.  His father was a US Senator who intervened to keep his son out of combat.

Here is the short version of the story at the link, above:

(1) Robertson, as a young Marine lieutenant en route to Korea in 1951, asked the assistance of his father, Virginia Senator A. Willis Robertson, to keep him out of combat.

(2) His father intervened and had his son and a friend taken off the troopship and kept in Japan. Four other young lieutenants also were taken off the ship for cover so that no political influence would be inferred.

(3) Some months later one of the four caught the ear of a General's aide at a cocktail party and volunteered all six for transfer to Korea, much to Robertson's anger and dismay.

(4) The six went to Korea, where several were forthwith wounded, but Robertson was assigned as the "liquor officer" with frequent booze runs to Japan.  He remained in the rear area, our of combat, supplying liquor to officers' clubs and screwing Korean prostitutes.

A woman encountered Rick Perry in a restaurant in Texas, asked him for a picture.

And did she ever get a picture!!!

Yes, this is for real.

Notice anything?  Look closely at her right hand, in front of his tie.

Here's what happened when 13 states raised their minimum wage.

Quoted from an article in The New Republic.

In 2014, 13 states raised their minimum wages, five through legislation and eight through inflation indexing. Gould compared wage growth for the bottom 10 percent of Americans in those 13 states with the rest of America. In the former, real wages grew 0.9 percent, a non-negligible increase. In the remaining 37 states, real wages declined 0.1 percent. In other words, wage growth for the bottom 10 percent of Americans is entirely attributable to states that increased their minimum wages.
.....
That’s good news, but it’s not unexpected. Conservatives largely concede that raising the minimum wage increases wages. They oppose it, they say, because it will reduce job growth. So, did that happen in those 13 states? Jared Bernstein, the former chief economist for Vice President Joe Biden and a senior fellow at the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities, looked at the data. He found that job growth was higher in states that raised their minimum wages than it was in those that didn’t (1.8 percent versus 1.5 percent).
.............
Bernstein is quick to point out the limitations of this data. “Now, these are all small changes and I wouldn’t make a federal case out of any of them,” he writes. But it’s also important to note that minimum wage hikes have not crippled job growth in those 13 states. When the Senate next votes on raising the national minimum wage—possibly in the next few weeks—that’s something Republicans should keep in mind

Listen -- that popping sound you hear is Republican heads exploding.

Why do Repbublicans hate ISIS? After all, they are exactly alike!!

-- QUOTE

BAGHDAD (AP) — The extremist-held Iraqi city of Mosul is set to usher in a new school year. But unlike years past, there will be no art or music. Classes about history, literature and Christianity have been "permanently annulled."

The Islamic State group has declared patriotic songs blasphemous and ordered that certain pictures be torn out of textbooks.

But instead of compliance, Iraq's second largest city has — at least so far — responded to the Sunni militants' demands with silence. Although the extremists stipulated that the school year would begin Sept. 9, pupils have uniformly not shown up for class, according to residents who spoke anonymously because of safety concerns. They said families were keeping their children home out of mixed feelings of fear, resistance and uncertainty.

"What's important to us now is that the children continue receiving knowledge correctly, even if they lose a whole academic year and an official certification," a Mosul resident who identified himself as Abu Hassan told The Associated Press, giving only his nickname for fear of reprisals. He and his wife have opted for home schooling, picking up the required readings at the local market.

<...>

The new curriculum even went so far as to explicitly ban Charles Darwin's theory of evolution — although it was not previously taught in Iraqi schools.

Not sure why the Repubicans claim to hate ISIS. They have so much in common with each other.

- Both oppose the teaching of evolution in schools
- Both are extremely religious
- Both like to parade around with guns.
- Both like to quote their favorite religious texts
- Both claim to be extremely patriotic and love to wave flags
- Both hate Obama

Here we go again . . . another war for no reason

A few editorial comments on Obama's speech announcing our "strategy" to "defeat ISIS."

On a lighter note -- some of the Old Redneck's favorite music

Here's a collection of YouTube videos of the Old Redneck's favorite music -- in no particular order.

The Amazing Rhythm Aces, "Lipstick Traces on a Cigarette"

Lucinda Williams, "Lake Charles"

The Stamps-Baxter Quartet, "Lord Build Me A Cabin in the Corner of Gloryland"

Johnny Cash, "The Ballad of Ira Hayes"

Hank Williams, "I Saw The Light"

More later.

Chuck Todd has his head up his ass

For his inaugural show as the host of NBC's Meet The Press, Todd interviewed President Obama.  When the interview turned to the Middle East, President Obama talked about Syria.  After the President had mentioned the situation in Syria at least four times, Todd said "You have not said 'Syria' yet."  It was clear the President suppressed the urge to say "WTF?!?!?!?  HAVE YOU BEEN LISTENING TO ME, YOU JACKASS?"

Go to this link to see David Letterman's take on Todd's bullshit.

Of course, Todd's stupidity is not being reported by any news outlet, and, NBC has slightly altered the transcript of the show to remove Todd's question.

Well, that does it . . . no more MTP . . . no more Washington Post

The Old Redneck has been Washington Post subscriber for decades.  No more.  The post just hired a former Reagan official as publisher.  It was bad enough when they started giving column space on the opinion page to brain-dead dumbass Jennifer Rubin.  It was even worse that they continue to carry George Will, who never has anything of value to say.  Then, there's Charles Kraphammer.

So -- the WashPost has now gone full-bore rightwing.  They can go without me.

I cancelled my subscription and won't bother to read it online.

And as if that weren't enough, here comes this news:

Also joining new moderator Chuck Todd’s team will be former Republican congressman and “Morning Joe” host Joe Scarborough, who sources say “is taking on a larger role within NBC News as a senior political analyst and would be one of the regular Sunday panelists.”We’re told the move is part of a plan to bring a right-leaning voice to the program to appeal to viewers turned off by the show’s famously left-leaning former hosts including the ousted David Gregory.

Joe Scarborough is joining "Meet the Press" to give it a "right-leaning voice."  WTF?!?!?!?!?  As if forcing Gramps McCain and Squeaky Graham on us every Sunday weren't enough, now we have to listen to Joe Scarborough.  Then, maybe this is a good thing -- someone may ask him to tell the truth about Lori Klausutis.  I'm not holding my breath.

Meanwhile, no more MTP for me.

Let's stop at least one lie about the Michael Brown - Officer Darrell Wilson incident

As usually happens in such an incident, no sooner was Michael Brown dead in Ferguson, Missouri, than the rightwing lie machine sprang into action.  The latest rightwing lie is a photo circulating on the 'net that is claimed to be of officer Darrell Wilson after he was severely beaten by Brown.

Here's the photo:

The idiots who are circulating this photo claim it shows Wilson in a hospital after he was beaten by Brown, thereby justifying Wilson's shooting of Brown.  It's a lie.

The photo is, in fact, professional motocross rider Jim McNeil.  McNeil died in a motorcycle accident in 2011.  This photo was taken in 2006 after McNeil was injured in another motorcycle accident.

Of course, this is not the only rightwing bullshit to claim that Brown beat Wilson, forcing Wilson to shoot him.  Earlier, a CT scan image circulated on the 'net, claiming to show Wilson's "fractured eye orbit" (the bone surrounding his eye).  Not so.  A sharp-eyed individual pointed out the date on the CT image had been whited out (upper right corner); however, someone forgot to white out the identification on the CT image that shows the image was made at the University of Iowa, not at the local Missouri hospital (lower right).

In August, Kansas City Police Officer Marc Catron posted an image on Facebook of a young man he claimed was Michael Brown. The man in the picture was pointing a gun at the camera and biting down on a wad off cash. Catron's caption for the image read, “I’m sure young Michael Brown is innocent and just misunderstood. I’m sure he is a pillar of the Ferguson community.”
That photo was, in fact, of  Joda Cain, a young Oregon man who is currently facing charges for killing his great-grandmother.
All of which makes one wonder:  Why do rightwingers need to lie and lie and lie?  Are they concerned that the truth will make them look like the hate-filled fools they are?

Former Virginia governor, former Mitt Romney VP candidate -- now a convicted felon -- guilty on eleven counts of bribery

You heard it right -- Bob McDonnell has been found guilty of 11 counts of official corruption.

In case you don't know who Bob McDonnell is, here are some facts:

  • Governor of Virginia, 2009-2013.
  • He was on Mitt Romney's short list of vice-presidential candidates.
  • Virginia Republicans figured if he wasn't VP, he'd be a Senator or a Romney cabinet member.
  • McDonnell was a protege' of Pat Robertson.
  • McDonnell is a hard-core rightwing biblethumper who tells other people how to live.
  • McDonnell is a champion of family values and strong marriages -- except that during the trial we learned that he and  his wife were on the splits because of her greed and his ignorance.
  • McDonnell wants to keep women barefoot and pregnant -- he got that from Pat Robertson.  Read McDonnell's "master's thesis" from his time at Pat Robertson's "university." (PDF version)
  • McDonnell and his wife were charged -- and now are found guilty -- of accepting bribes from a sleazy Virginia businessman who was trying to use the governor's influence to market his snake oil product.

So, Bob McDonnell, who spent his life telling everyone else what NOT to do with their bodies, what NOT to do in their bedrooms, how to have the perfect marriage -- who spent his life warning us of the evils of feminism -- who signed the law requiring women to undergo and unnecessary vaginal ultrasound before they could have an abortion -- that Bob McDonnell is shown to be just ANOTHER example of right-wing, theocratic, moralistic hypocrisy. Should Bob's mentor, Pat Robertson, get any credit for inculcating such fine moral values in his former student?

Bottom line: Why am I not surprised, given the long list of people just like him?

Bob McDonnell in happier days - - -

- - - showing off the $6,700 Rolex that was one of the bribes given to him by sleazebag Jonnie Williams.  He should have stuck with his old Timex.

ISIS, Commies in the streets of San Francisco, and other lies

I am a retired Army officer, serving 1967 - 1995.  As a young lieutenant I was ten feet tall and bulletproof, full of piss and vinegar.  The very best and brightest minds we could find told me if I didn't stop the Commies in Vietnam, they'd rampage through Southeast Asia and be in the streets of San Francisco before we knew it.  (See "Domino Theory" and "The Best and the Brightest.")

I believed 'em, so, along with a few million other young men, I saddled up, went to Vietnam, and killed Commies.  Then, in 1973, we figured out the Best and the Brightest were full of shit.  We buried 60,000 dead young Americans along with untold thousands of dead Vietnamese and now we buy all our Nikes from Vietnam.

I was born in 1944 and for almost half-a-century I was told we MUST keep tens of thousands of troops in Europe and Japan and God-only-knows-where-else as well as spending zillions of dollars to stop the Evil Empire in its tracks.  Then, one day in 1989, the Evil Empire went "poof" and was gone.

And now the Best and the Brightest are telling us we need to stop ISIS before we see nuclear clouds over American cities.

I'm ignoring them this time.

Paul Ryan's reading list: Rubbish and nonsense

Paul Ryan -- the Paul Ryan who produced the Ryan Poverty Budget -- the Paul Ryan who was Mitt Romney's VP candidate -- the Paul Ryan who is supposed to be THE budget guru of the Republican Party -- lets everyone know the three books that most influenced him are:

Ayn Rand, Atlas Shrugged
Jude Wanniski, The Way the World Works
George Gilder, Wealth and Poverty

Holy shit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Ryan's reading list is RUBBISH of the highest order.  No wonder he's a damn fool.

Atlas Shrugged is best described by this well-known quote:
There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other involves orcs, Hobbits, a ring, and magic.
Wealth and Poverty is a weird, rambling recitation of free-market claims.  The only reason anyone pays atttention to this book is that it came out about the time Reagan was elected and, thus, it is seen as an intellectual manifesto for the GOP.

The Way the World Works is a wackadoodle argument that the entire history of the world can be explained by changes in tax rates.  The fall of the Roman Empire, rise of the Nazis -- all came about because of tax rates.  It's a work of a deranged view of history.

And that, folks, is the man who is considered by the GOP as their budget wizard.

What was that about Presidential vacations?

Every time President Obama picks up a golf club, the rightwingers go nuts, raving about how much vacation time he's taking.  Let's review the past few presidents and their vacation days.

Any questions??

Something to think about

Governor Bob McDonnell is now living with a convicted sex offender

First, let's review the background..

-- Bob McDonnell is the former governor of Virginia, serving 2009-2013.  Before that, he served in the VA General Assembly and as a prosecuting attorney.  He is a close friend of TV preacher Pat Robertson, who gave McDonnell his start in politics.
-- McDonnell is virulently anti-gay and anti-women.  His "master's thesis" at Pat Robertson's "university" is a classic piece of rightwing nonsense.
-- Shortly before leaving office, McDonnell and his wife were accused of taking bribes from a sleazy Virginia businessman who was trying to get the governor's support for his snake oil product.  Jonnie Williams plied the McDonnell's with gifts and money -- Google "Star Scientific" and "Governor McDonnell" for the details.
-- In August, the McDonnell's went on trial in federal court.  Governor Bob's defense is "I was so busy being governor I didn't realize my wife was accepting all these gifts from her dirtbag friend."

Turns out, he has moved out of the family's home and is now living with a Catholic priest.

And now it turns out the Catholic priest is an admitted sex offender who spent his off-duty time prowling gay bars around Norfolk.

The following is quoted from:
http://www.bishop-accountability.org/news2003_01_06/2003_05_11_RichmondTimes_PriestWho.htm

The Rev. Wayne L. Ball, a Norfolk priest who pleaded guilty late last year to a misdemeanor sex offense, has been reassigned to St. John's Catholic Church in Highland Springs, according to The Catholic Virginian, a biweekly diocesan newspaper. The move is effective June 2.

Ball, 42, has served as pastor of Norfolk's Holy Trinity Catholic Church since 2000. The current pastor at St. John's, the Rev. David V. McGuire, will replace Ball at Holy Trinity.

In December, Ball pleaded guilty in Norfolk General District Court to the misdemeanor charge of frequenting a bawdy place. Norfolk police arrested Ball and a 41-year-old Richmond man on the night before Thanksgiving in a parked car in a Norfolk park. The judge continued Ball's case until July 8 and will dismiss the charge if the priest has no further criminal problems and completes 80 hours of community service by June 3. The man in the car with Ball received a similar deal.[...]

Ball will be the second Catholic priest who recently pleaded guilty to a sex crime to serve at St. John's in Highland Springs.
In February, the Rev. John P. Blankenship, who served at St. John's from 1973 to 1977, pleaded guilty in Prince George County to four counts of sodomy. The charges stemmed from incidents that occurred after Blankenship's time at St. John's.

Perhaps this would not be news but for the fact that McDonnell based his entire political career on attacking gays, women, and minorities.  He is a typical rightwing politician -- looks good in a suit; makes a good speech; not very bright; says all the right things about gays, women, minorities, guns . . . you know the story.

As with all rightwing politicians, he's a "strong family man" -- who has now thrown his wife under the bus and run over her several times.  Now he's living with his BFF,  a gay Catholic priest.  Wonder how long before ol' Bob McDonnell comes out of the closet?

What happens to "open carry" when it's black men openly carrying the firearms?

Over the past months, we have been treated to more and more "open carry" demonstrations -- that is, people (mostly men, all white, mostly semi-literate rednecks) sling rifles over their shoulders and walk around town -- into restaurants, into stores, up and down main streets.  Their claim is they have a right to openly carry firearms -- that is, if they have a point.

Here are links that describe various "open-carry" demonstrations.

  • Open Carry Advocates Return to Target Stores
  • Chipotle not happy with firearms being carried in their restaurants
  • "Open-carry" dingbats invading Kroger stores

Did you notice in all the photos of "open-carry" demonstrations that the clowns carrying weapons are all young, snaggle-toothed white men?

Well, now let's see what happens in Texas when a group of young black men shoulder their firearms and march around town.

The woman in the passing car shouted, "Black power!" And the gun-rights advocates lined up on the sidewalk outside Forest Avenue Baptist Church on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard returned the call. In the heat of a Wednesday afternoon, about 30 black men and a few women, dressed head-to-toe in black, stood with long guns slung around their shoulders. They marched to protest police brutality in general and to encourage gun ownership.
A few groups were represented in the ranks of the marchers, said Charles Goodson, an organizer of the march and head of the Huey P. Newton Gun Club, which wants people to know they have the right to own guns. Many marchers had Black Panther patches on their black fatigues. Marcher Priest DeBrazier said the Panthers were there in response to the slaying of Michael Brown by police in Ferguson, Missouri, but Goodson said the march had been planned before Brown's death August 9.

What do you bet the open-carry demonstrations stop very quickly?

NOTE:  Who is Huey P. Newton?  Back in the 1960's, he was a Black Panther leader who scared the hell out of everyone.

Ferguson, Missouri, and surrounding towns use local court to suppress black citizens

QUOTE
Ferguson Feeds Off the Poor: Three Warrants a Year Per Household
In the chamber where Officer Darren Wilson received a commendation six months before killing Michael Brown, a minor court generates major money from the city’s poor and working people.
. . .
But there is another, unnoticed irony in the venue itself. Three times a month—one day and two nights—the City Council chamber also serves as home to the incredibly busy and extremely profitable Ferguson municipal court.
A report issued just last week by the nonprofit lawyer’s group ArchCity Defenders notes that in the court’s 36 three-hour sessions in 2013, it handled 12,108 cases and 24,532 warrants. That is an average of 1.5 cases and three warrants per Ferguson household. Fines and court fees for the year in this city of just 21,000 people totaled $2,635,400.
The sum made the municipal court the city’s second-biggest source of revenue. It is also almost certainly was a major factor in the antagonism between the police and the citizenrypreceding the tragedy that resulted when Wilson had another encounter with a subject six months after he got his commendation.
And any complete investigation into how Michael Brown came to be sprawled dead in the street with a half-dozen bullet wounds must consider not just the cop but the system he served, a system whose primary components include a minor court that generates major money, much of it from poor and working people.
Five of the six City Council members who meet in this chamber are white, even though the city itself is more than 70 percent black. The City Council appoints the municipal judge, currently Ron Brockmeyer, who is also white.
But when this same chamber serves as Ferguson Municipal Court, a disproportionate number of the defendants are black.

American exceptionalism on display

Check out this graphic.

U.S. cops killed more than one person EACH DAY last year while, at the same time, Japanese and British cops killed no one and German cops killed only eight people.  Yes, it's true -- the USA really is exceptional.

Let's cut through the bullshit and speak truth.

REPUBLICANS ARE TRASH.

REPUBLICANS ARE CANCERS IN THE BODY OF THE NATION.

GOT IT????

Let's see if I understand this

Twenty-one percent of children in Kentucky live below the poverty level.

Kentucky just approved giving an $18,000,000 tax break to a guy who wants to build a "Noah's Ark" theme park.

Republicans are insane liars!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Let's see if I understand this:

1.  House Republicans plan to sue President Obama because he issued executive orders to delay implementation of certain sections of the Affordable Care Act.

2.  House Republicans voted over 50 times to repeal the Affordable Care Act.

So why are they upset that he delayed the Act's implementation?

And now come this -- remember -- they are suing Obama for acting alone.

1.  The Senate passed a bill authorizing $3 billion to deal with the flood of immigrants, mostly children, now along the US-Mexico border.

2.  On Monday, 28 July, House Republicans were ready to deal with the issue, saying the border bill was high priority.

3.  On Wednesday, 30 July, they voted to sue the President.

4.  On Thursday, 1 August, they pulled the bill and said the President SHOULD ACT ALONE ON THE BORDER MATTER.  But I thought they were suing him for acting alone????

Here's a quote from House Appropriations Committee Chairman Hal Rogers (R, KY):

"I think this will put a lot more pressure on the president to act," Rogers said. "In many ways, it was his actions and inactions that caused the crisis on the border, and we attempted in this bill to help remedy this crisis. He has the authority and power to solve the problem forthwith."
This is REALLY confusing . . . is the President supposed to take executive action or is he not supposed to take executive action?

John Boehner, lying as usual, says impeachment is "all a scam started by Democrats."

As we know, all Republicans are liars and cannot be trusted to tell anything resembling the truth.

Now, as Republicans in the House of Representatives prepare to sue the President for doing his job, there is lots of talk from Republicans about impeaching the President.  John Boehner, Speaker of the House and Chief Liar, says the impeachment talk is all by Democrats who want to use the topic as a fundraiser.

Boehner lies.  Check it out.

House of Representatives Schedule, July through November 2014

This is the work schedule for the Republican-controlled House of Representatives for July through November 4 (Election Day), 2014.

No jobs bill, no infrastructure repair bill, nothing of any value to anyone -- BUT -- they do have time to sue the President and to consider impeachment.

Sarah Palin DRUNK . . . video of her speech in Denver last week . . . incoherent, babbling, knee-walking drunk

Follow this link to video of a speech Sarah Palin delivered to a conservative group in Denver.

Listen to her -- slurred speech, incoherent.  No sentence makes any sense.  No sentence is connected to the sentence before or after it.  She must be shit-faced drunk . . . on she took a handful of pills before going on stage.

Thank you, John McCain, for forcing this brainless twit on the rest of the nation.

Why are all Republicans phony???

Republicans are phony.  Liars, cheats, crooks, and phonies.  Yet, their "base" continues to swoon over their every word and re-elect them.  Tells us something about the intelligence of the Republican "base."

Here's an example . . . check out this photo of Texas Governor Rick Perry.

Perry is concerned about the influx if illegal child refugees coming over the Texas-Mexico border.  So -- what does he do?  Boards a Texas National Guard helicopter and has himself photographed while draped over a .50-caliber machine gun, peering out of the window, assumedly scouring the countryside for children to shoot.

Check him out -- steely-eyed; glasses removed; cap on backwards; right hand on the trigger; left hand draped over the receiver with his Texas A&M class ring in full view.

And wearing his mom jeans.

What a phony piece of shit.  Typical Republican.

25 July: Not much rightwing crazy today . . . but there's still enough of The Crazy

FLOURIDE AND CHEMTRAILS AND RIGHTWINGERDINGERS!! OH MY!!!

First, a word of explanation.  Everyone has looked into the sky and seen vapor trails from jet aircraft.   The vapor trails are just that -- water vapor.  If you breathe out on a cold day, you can see your breath -- because the warm air coming out of your mouth hits the cold air and condenses into visible water vapor.  Same thing with a jet aircraft.  They fly several miles about the ground where the temperature is well below zero.  The hot air coming from the jet engines hits the cold air and condenses, thus, you see a trail of water vapor coming from the airplane.  On days when the humidity is low, the vapor trails are short -- on humid days, long, sometimes very long.

However, one of the favorite conspiracy theories of the insane people who make up the Republican base is that these vapor trails are, in fact, "chemtrails" -- trails of harmful chemicals that "the government" is spreading through aircraft exhausts.  I know.  CRAZY.  Twilight Zone crazy.  But that's what they believe -- so says this Nevada candidate who is backed by Ron Paul.

Oh, and don't forget -- adding flouride to the drinking water is a communist plot.

 Now, on with the story.

A Ron Paul endorsed candidate for county commissioner in Nevada outlined her conspiracy theory-informed vision for local governance in recently posted video.

Cindy Lake, a Republican candidate for Clark County commissioner, said she became active in politics because Paul – the former Texas congressman and failed presidential candidate – mentioned during a debate that he supported the right to drink raw milk.
“I think you have a right to put whatever you would like to put into your body, if you’re a grown adult,” Lake said during a candidates forum in April, which was posted online Thursday. “I don’t think the government should tell any of us what we should eat, drink, or how to raise our children.”
. . .
Then the moderator asked her about fluoride in public drinking water.
“That is another one of my passions,” Lake said. “I’m completely anti-fluoride.”
She said toothpaste tubes warn against swallowing, and she said that was reason enough to remove fluoride from the water supply.
“It costs us just under a million dollars a year to add what is a toxic industrial waste chemical to our water, and we’re paying for that, when if you want it, you can certainly buy your own toothpaste that’s fluoridated,” Lake said. “I don’t want to give that to my family, and I don’t want it in my water.”
An audience member took the microphone and, gesturing toward the sky, warned that the greatest public health hazard came from chemtrails.
“Who’s polluting the county? How do we stop it? I don’t know,” the man said. “But they’re doing it all over the world, this geo-engineering. For who? What are they trying to do to the human species?”
The moderator tugged his leather jacket, and the video was edited at that point and then resumed as the man walked away from the microphone and took a seat.
“I do think an investigation has to be undertaken by the county commission and find out exactly what our role is there,” Lake said, without specifying how the investigation would be conducted or funded. “I don’t know who’s doing it; it’s a secret operation. As far as chemtrails go, I don’t want to be poisoned as much as anybody else, so I would vote no.”
Another took the microphone and explained that, as a pilot with 34 years of experience, the fears over chemtrails were unfounded.
“I respectfully asked my liberty friends to be very careful about this chemtrails thing, because to me, it’s all B.S.,” the man said. “The reason you see chemtrails like you do, is because there are thousands of planes flying overhead.”
Lake told the man they should discuss the issue later, and related an anecdote about inventor Nikolai Tesla’s so-called “death ray” that is widely shared among chemtrail conspiracy theorists.
“I’m not 100 percent sure what’s being sprayed up there, and why, if anybody was spraying us — aren’t they spraying themselves, too?” Lake said. “I do think that there’s some validity to it. I don’t have the science to prove it, but as with drones, I think things can be used for the good and for the bad.”
“Unfortunately, the government, when they are given any kind of tool, tend to use it against the citizens to control us, so my perspective is, I wouldn’t discount it without further investigation because there is some proof to (it), from what I understand in my research,” she added.

And that, folks, is enough rightwing craziness for one day.

24 July 2014: Today's rightwing insanity

Let's check in on The Crazy that represents today's conservatives, Republicans, biblethumpers, and rightwingers.

FIRST -- from Texas where a Congressman urged compassion for children crossing the US border only to be attacked by his constituents.

A town  hall meeting held by Texas Tea Party state Rep. David Simpson (R) on Wednesday got heated as Simpson’s constituents railed at him for not doing more to stop the influx of unaccompanied, undocumented minors coming to the United States from Central and South America.
The Longview, Texas News-Journal reported that the conservative attendees expressed health concerns, religious fears and doubts about Simpson’s commitment to putting his “constituents first.”
Simpson attempted to tell the crowd of about 160 residents that the thousands of children arriving at the Mexico-U.S. border are fleeing lives of violence and abuse, including gangsters who specialize in trafficking children as sex slaves. Texans should treat the children with compassion, he said, a notion that his audience summarily rejected.  His audience went on the attack the Central American children as carriers of tuberculosis, leprosy, and ebola (none of which is true).
Here are a couple of samples of the hate and ignorance that's rampant among "conservatives" and "Christians."
“I’ve got four kids and a fifth one on the way,” Denson said. “These [Central American] kids have scabies and influenza, viral pneumonia, leprosy. These kids are going to be part of the school system…They are bleeding Texas [Democrat] blue.”
Other residents fear that the children are already criminals in their hearts.
“We need our borders protected. We need a lot of things, but what we don’t need is more people at the trough,” said Thomas Rolland to Simpson. “These people are not coming in with a good, Christian heart. Most of them are criminals, anyway.”
NEXT -- From Tennessee where a lady was asked not to drive so fast through a WalMart parking lot.  So she pulled a gun to protect her right to speed through a crowded parking lot.
A woman in Rutherford County, Tennessee was arrested Tuesday after she allegedly brandished a gun at a man who told her to stop speeding through a Walmart parking lot.
WGN radio from Murfreesboro, TN reported that 37-year-old Angela Scruggs was charged with aggravated assault for reportedly pointing the weapon and telling Jason Hill that she was going to shoot.
Hill told police that Scruggs nearly struck his son when she went speeding by in her Nissan Altima. He shouted to her to “stop speeding,” at which point a confrontation ensued.
FROM TEXAS, AGAIN -- "Open carry birthers" meet at Dealey Plaza -- where an American president was shot to death -- to "exercise" their right to carry loaded weapons openly -- and to denounce President Obama as not an American citizen.  And that's only a part of the insanity these people spout.
Supporters of open carry gun laws rallied over the weekend by bringing assault-style rifles and other types of firearms to Dealey Plaza, the site of President John F. Kennedy’s assassination.
In a video posted to YouTube, activists explain that they return to Dealey Plaza in Dallas each month to exercise their right to openly carry firearms.
Documents displayed by the demonstrators include information about New York Pastor James David Manning, who has criticized President Barack Obama for releasing “the homo demons,” and who also believes that Jesus would “stone” LGBT people to death.
In addition to supporting the constitutional right to keep and bear arms, the literature distributed by the activists asserts that President Obama is not a U.S. citizen.
“We ain’t going to give up our guns,” an activist named Rudy insists. “I’m just sick and tired of these foreigners coming in this country, and they don’t have any idea what American freedom is all about.”
“We’re worried about foreigners coming over the border, we’ve got a foreigner as president!” Rudy exclaimed. “We got a foreigner that was born in Kenya that had an illegal birth certificate as president, and you guys worried about foreigners coming over the border. So, the bottom line is we aren’t giving up our guns.”
The video ends with an impromptu sermon on the infamous Grassy Knoll about the dangers of women wearing “sexually charged” clothing.
The man preaching notes that President John F. Kennedy would have had a chance to meet God if he had not had a “lustful spirit.”
“You are a sinner, you deserve hell!” the preacher shouts.
“Amen!” the leader of the pro-gun protest yells back.
And that, folks is all The Crazy I can stand for one day.  Remember:  These ignorant, hate-filled, biblethumping clowns are the "base" of the Republican party.
